The Global Business School Network (GBSN) has partnered with the Baghdad Business School (BBS) to prepare Iraqi youth to start their own businesses or find jobs in the private sector. The two organizations were recently awarded a one-year grant from the U.S. Department of State to strengthen the curriculum and effectiveness of the BBS business program.
Through this partnership, GBSN enhanced the BBS business program by developing 3 new modules on human resource management, sales, and professional skills in addition to creating 40-50 hour long certificate programs on the same topics as well as accounting and artificial intelligence (AI).
Iraq’s population is one of the youngest in the world, with one-third between 15 and 29 years of age. Youth unemployment sits at about 36%. Many university graduates lack the English language proficiency and business skills needed to obtain jobs in the private sector. To address this skills gap, BBS offers a one-year Business Foundations Program in English language, business, and soft and professional skills that prepares Iraqi youth for work in the private sector. Five cohorts have completed the program to date. Over 90 % of the graduates have started their own businesses, found jobs, or advanced their careers in the private sector.
The Global Business School Network is a nonprofit organization that empowers business schools worldwide to work together to strengthen the contributions of management education to the development needs of society. Within the context of its mission, GBSN builds activities, programs, and projects that enable the creation of new knowledge, provide meaningful international experiences, and build relationships that can transform management education, as well as provide broad visibility to its member schools as champions and change makers for economic and social development.
